Exercise 1 : Sound Dubbing
For the sound dubbing exercise, we were told as a class to dub a scene
from the movie "Soul" with our own voices. We were given the soundless
video, and the transcript for the characters.
So with all of the required files, I started editing the video.
I first observed how the characters' lips moved so that it would be accurate when I dub their voices.
I thought that the man would sound very manly and deep in voice, so I made my voice sound more masculine. And I did the opposite for the cat.
I had a dedicated mic so I used that to record my voice. When recording, I made multiple samples and tried to alter the voice delays and such to get the timings right for it to fit the character.

Figure 1.3: Audio settings usage
I played around with all of the audio settings to really try to fit the film. I also added in the pitch shifter to the voice overs I did so that it was more appropriate.

I tried using a New York sound ambience that I found on YouTube, but it
had some cursing in the background and it was too noisy for it to match
with the muted video that we were supposed to edit on. So, I found a
video that was named “quiet streets ambience sound library” and divided
to work with that since it felt more natural and fitting to the video.
The car sounds and the other sound effect was downloaded separately and
were plopped on in the video.
There were 6 total recordings done for each individual and in addition,
a “huh” sound.
Many ambience sounds were used for this composition, such as the car
sound, the leaves, the street, and the footsteps of other people walking
along the sidewalk.
For the footsteps, I made some of it have different pitch even with the
same sound, just because it felt very autonomous and unrealistic if it
all sounded the same. So, to make it sound real, I made the little
girl’s footsteps have different pitches.
Speaking of the little girl, I changed the script a little bit to match
to what she was saying on the screen. The script said to make the girl
giggle, but to me, it didn’t really look like she was giggling but
“wee”ing. On that, I also added in a “again, again” because she was
jumping to her father and since she liked that she was swung, she would
most likely say “again”.
For this exercise, we didn't get too much information on doing this, but with a sample of your voice, you were needed to make 5 different effects with the voice.
I first recorded myself just introducing myself. And I imported the voice recording onto premiere pro. With the help of Youtube tutorials, I learnt the effects of Convolution reverb and the Parametric Equalizer. With those 2, I played around with the presets and got the results of a Cave, Muffle, Television, Hallway and lastly Bathroom.
For the final exercise for project 1, we were again given a drive folder, and in here, there were 3 audio files. Mr Martin gave us the instructions to magnify the explosion sound, as it was too short, make then punch effect have 2 more punches in them and lastly, make the sound sample have an alien voice.
This was pretty easy to do, and I just imported each of them to premiere pro and I just edited them one by one accordingly. For the explosion, I used the Ripple edit tool to make the explosion be a bit longer in the end.
Then, for the 3 punches, easily, I just duplicated the first one twice and I also used the ripple edit tool to make it a bit more believable and be more unique for the final punch.

Then finally, I used the flager effect tool to edit the final voice sample to make it into a weird reverb so that it would sound like an alien.
For the experience, I really liked this project. It was mix of everything that I was capable of doing and getting praised for it by Mr Martin was really a good feeling for me. I personally enjoy playing around in premiere pro so this was quite easy and fun for me.
Observations
I think because I had experience in premiere pro already, I found myself having a good time and an easy time as I could just do what I had always done.
Findings
Although much of the exercises were quite easy to do, I still learnt quite a lot from the other effects that I could use in premiere pro. This was really helpful for me to learn be used in future projects.
