Week 4 - Sense of Place

For a success visualization of a sense of place, a unique observation must be met simultaneously.

Visual analysis makes a person look out and be more vigilant towards a design by looking into more of the elements and the principles that is shown. Observation is to look closely into the artwork and analyzing the visual elements.

With clear observation, a designer can take out what they see in their view and express it in a way for others to visualize as well. Designers and artists takes these observation into practice to their art pieces and creates stunning works.

Sense of place

An idea of Sense of place is to identify a place that connects to you and relates to you. There must be a place where you have had a moment in your life if you really take a time to think about it or a place that really has an impact to you. With the visualization of the place, observations of the surroundings and the feeling it gives should be taken into account since it helps with the development of the design. These ideas should be plotted down and it should come together when starting up the artwork of a place that resonates with you.

PROJECT 2 : Sense of Place

- Visual Research

For this project, I went ahead and thought about the places where i could be myself the most and enlighten my pleasures. I believed that I was the kind of person who liked to be in dark places and not express myself too much but once i thought about it thoroughly, I found myself liking places that are monumental and made me feel small. Of course, since I liked these sort of things where an object or an organism has the ability to overpower me in an instant, it meant that I didn't have megalophobia where I am scared of enormous things.

Figure 1.2: The Colosseum

I think the reason why I am interested in things that overpowers me physically is because ever since i became taller than most people i met, things became smaller as i looked at it, wherever i went it just felt as if i was not in the right type of place. But when I get to go to places as big as a hill or a mountain, I feel at peace and that i don't need to care even a single bit of what people think of me.

Architectural designs and artwork of buildings have always intrigued me in some sort of way and it felt very simplistic yet so beautiful. I loved the sense of drawings of buildings in some sort of sketch books with correct proportions by using equipment such as rulers and other stationery.

Figure 1.3: artwork from Akihito Horigome

The image figure 1.3, was drawn by Akihito Horigome, who i found about just recently when i was scrolling through google but this type of drawing/artwork really amazes me in many ways. There is only a small portion of the sky on the left, but it just ends there and it just goes back to the canvas after cutting off from the blue paint. but it doesn't seem unnatural and the captured artwork looks very free and spacious.

- Design Process

From the figures, i would've loved to draw the sceneries but unluckily, I haven't been to Italy and I felt like if i drew them, the feelings that i have towards the art wouldn't be genuine. So of course, as a South Korean myself, I wanted to draw something that captivated me the last time i went to Korea. A unique building, that is very traditional and something that has meaning towards the architecture. Then, as i was browsing through my gallery, the tower from the independence hall of Korea, came along and I knew that i wanted to try drawing that.

From the images, I first outlined the tower symmetrically with the help of the mirror tool in Photoshop. With the outline done, I drew in straight lines for the 'wings' of the building with the straight line tool connecting one point to the other. After, I drew in a simple sketch of the background, such as the mountains, trees and the other corresponding buildings next to the tower.

Figure 2.4: Sketch

With the sketch done, I started adding in details to the artwork with the primary colors that i can work with. After filling in the dark, dull colors to the specific types of objects seen in the artwork, I added in more light and dark colors to resemble reflection, light and shadows. Other objects such as lampposts, fences, platforms and etc, were added and colored in with the respectable hues.

Figure 2.5: Colors added into the design

The colors that were added looks dull and although I could've made it vibrant and colorful, I wanted to show the seriousness of the meaning of this place 'the independence hall of Korea'. As the name implies, it was built for the independence of Korea after Korea defended the attack from Japan in the year of 1945. The history is kept in this museum and this building stands tall where is viewable as soon as you walk in the front gates. Of course, it is something to rejoice about for the Koreans, but I felt like it would be more suitable to have a dark theme to represent the lost ones who died during the battle.

Figure 2.6: Details added into the design

If it wasn't for the people and the soldiers who died for the protection of this country, there wouldn't have been a country called Korea, South nor North and I wouldn't have been able to be born by my loving family, so for that I am truly thankful for the people who have dedicated their lives in the past on making the present day a brighter day and this artwork, even if it isn't that great of a piece, I wanted to make it with the deepest intent to thank them. When I saw this tower and the museum, I felt at peace since even though it is in the past, it is something to learn from and it has the spirits of all the brave men and women who made the country still standing.

FEEDBACK

Week 5

I asked Dr Charles for a feedback on the 5th week and he told me to try to put some different perspectives into the artwork and that I need to keep the feeling of why I chose this place for this assignment. I was told to ask myself why, the scale, the atmosphere it gives, the spirit and the history of the place that resembles myself in an psychological way.

For the assignment, Dr Charles has told me to create different concepts and perspective of the tower but with the way i positioned the tower, I was happy about the perspective of symmetry on the tower to give a sense of balance.

REFLECTION

Week 5

For this assignment and the creation of this artwork, I wanted to take a building to more of a focus than a scenery since I wanted to draw the attention of the viewer to the center where the tower stood. It doesn't give exactly a sense of place when you look at it but I wanted the viewer to captivate the overwhelming feeling of just by looking at the tower and the ground it stands on.

Overall, I think this was a very fun project to work on, going into more deep into the background art and landscapes that mirrors what kind of places that you feel most at home. While doing the research on the design, I also have learnt things that i never knew about in the culture of Korea, so it was very educational and momentous to remember what happened to my country in the past.

I decided to name my artwork 'a debt of gratitude' since it made me feel at peace when I was there in the hall of independence and to thank all of the people who died for a better future of Korea. I just feel like I shouldn't take this thing for granted. So in a sense of repaying the lost ones, I have put the title as a debt that I owe for this beautiful country that I grew in.
