Project 2A - Double Exposure

For this Double Exposure task, We were given a picture of a model and we were supposed to mask out the background and make a surreal image out of the other components we were handed. As we followed the video Mr. Martin provided us with I got the results similar to the video's. Although the video's artwork had gradient in the background I decided to stick with a greyscale monochromatic background to give it a sincere look.

Figure 1.2: Tutorial Outcome (25.04.2022)

With the tutorial exercise done, we were tasked to make this surreal digital art into our own images. I got myself a photo of me staring at something that I can't really recall of and started getting references online.

Figure 1.4: Photos Used #2 (10.05.2022)

I wanted to make a calming sensation to the composition so that is why i went with a forest for the reference photos.

Figure 1.5: Photos Used #3 (10.05.2022)

I used this photo of me for this part of the project since it felt like it would best fit to the calming environment that I would put into the composition.

Figure 1.5: Progress #1 (11.05.2022)

I started the exercise by making the saturation to a 0 to make a black toned picture, and added a low, pastel green color to the background. The second reference of the image was added to the mask, by masking the out the mask first then applying it with the picture.

Figure 1.6: Progress #2 (11.05.2022)

Then I manipulated around the curves to have the main body of me be lighter than before so that it doesn't seem too gloomy. Doing the same thing as before with the mask, I added the first reference photo to the hair to make it seem like I am thinking or being part of nature.

Figure 1.7: Progress #3 (11.05.2022)

I added some clouds here and there to fill up some of the space and copied myself twice and changed the hues of them to give it a surreal look.

Final Outcome

Project 2B (part 1) - Digital Imaging

We masked out the picture of Shazam from its poster and pasted it onto the picture of the mansion. There was a platform that someone could stand on in the mansion so we were told to paste him onto that platform. With the help of the video, we made adjustments to him and came out the outcome seen in the figure below.

Figure 2.1: Tutorial Outcome (21.04.2022)

We were told to replicate this but instead of Shazaam in the photo, it was supposed to be us in it. So with a photo of me lying around in my gallery, I used it to put myself into the mansion.

Figure 2.3: Final Outcome (21.04.2022)

I did exactly what I did for the second one where I am in the mansion, after learning on how to mask and bring a character or an object from another image to the main canvas. I tried to make the proportions of this as accurate as possible as the mansion does seem like it is huge in person. This was a great exercise overall to start off with masking in my opinion.

Project 2B (part 2) - Recoloring Black & White

In this part of the project, we were tasked to follow the tutorial instructions of recoloring a picture of black and white, to a picture with color. It consisted of having reference colored photos and using those colors to add to the working photo of greyscale.

Figure 3.1: Tutorial Outcome (12.05.2022)

We were then needed to make our own following the tutorial's steps for one of the greyscale images provided at the end of the slides.

I decided to go with the picture of Kobe, and got myself 2 pictures of African American Individuals to get color reference from to put into the picture.

Project 2C - Photo Manipulation

Sketches

Figure 4.1: Sketches (15.05.2022)

The concept of the whole exercise for this part of the project is to make alterations of a photograph to get the desired outcome.

For the sketches, I though of some of the most similar looking things visually and matched them up together by having to make connections to one another. The samples that were shown by Mr. Martin was a great example to show that the color is also a factor to having a good photo manipulation between 2 objects. If there is a banana and an another object that is yellow, it can easily be put together whether they look the same or not.

Project 2C - Photo Manipulation (Redo)

Mr. Martin has said that the concept was good, but the edit on the frog was poorly done and that it needed to be reworked.

The problem about this composition was that although the frog eggs in the passion fruit did have resemblance, many people wouldn't really know unless a frog is there. So I tried to think of something that had a better composition.

I thought of different types of things, such as ice cream, while a person is skiing down off of it but it didn't really seem like it would work as it would just be adding a skiing man to the ice cream. So, I cam up with a chocolate bar that is opened and the chocolate is visible but instead of a chocolate, it would be a keyboard, as it has the shape of a chocolate bar.

Sketch

Figure 4.3: Sketch (Redo) (21.05.2022)

The sketch was a pretty simple idea. There would be a chocolate wrapper that would be opened to see the inside, and the chocolate. And another photo of a keyboard would be taken to photoshop in, onto the chocolate.

Figure 4.5: Photos Taken #2 (22.05.2022)

These 2 photos were taken to be used for the project. It took some time to get the best photos for these 2 objects and these 2 were the ones that came out the most optimum.

I first deleted the chocolate inside the package, so that I can put in the keyboard without any visibility of the chocolate to avoid it being messy. After, with the perspective warping, I changed the keyboard to look more in shape of the chocolate. Then, I added it to the chocolate wrap.

Additional editing was done such as shadows and deletion of poorly selected objects, etc.

Figure 4.7: Before and After of adding shadows (23.05.2022)

There were a lot of edits such as curves, hue, saturation added to each layer of the photoshop composition.

Figure 4.8: Layers (23.05.2022)

I showed the composition to Mr. Martin and he was a lot more impressed than the previous work and he told me that I could make some adjustments here and there to make it better.

First he told me that I could lower the saturation of the keyboard, make the background more greyer than blue...? As it didn't really fit the theme all that well.

Figure 4.9: Final concept #1 (23.05.2022)

This was pretty much finished, but I still wanted to add in a bit more detail to it so I added in some part of the chocolate and made it seem like the keycaps of the keyboard was made of chocolate. However, I didn't want to go overboard, so I added it to the inner part of the keyboard.

FEEDBACK

Mr. Martin has said that he liked the idea of the frog eggs in the passion fruit but that the frog was poorly edited and that it needed to go. But the thing about that composition was, if there was no frog there, there was practically no way someone would realize those are frog eggs. The left side of the frog eggs was also not similar to the right one as it had a different contrast and hue, so I just decided to go with a new composition

The chocolate keyboard composition was looking way more promising than the passion fruit, and Mr. Martin approved of it a lot more. But he did tell me to try and reduce the contrast of the composition, and the contrast as well. He also said that I need to change the background color to grey so that it looks better and gives it an appealing look.

REFLECTIONS

Experience

During the task, I realized that there are still many things to learn in photoshop. The way I needed to take different shots of the objects that were needed for the task was also something pretty new to me as I never really thought about putting 2 different objects together as one in photo editing.

Observations

I found myself quite lost when I did the frog egg one, and couldn't really think of anything else after that. But after giving it some thoughts and talking to people about suggestions, I had an idea.

I was also slacking off between different works that I had to do for other subjects and I intend to fix that as soon as possible.

Findings

I found out that having to look through many artworks really helps out bring out the creativity by a lot, therefore using Pinterest is an amazing source of ideas.
The saturation and the brightness of an object can really define what you want to emphasize and I really took notice of that in this particular task.
