Task 2
Instructions
Tasks
Task 2a: Key Artwork
For this exercise, we were given the task to create our own "Logo" or a
mark that we would identify ourselves with. It had to resemble what kind
of person you are, internally and the way you think. We needed to use
our pet name, our first name, or a nickname that we had, and reflect our
persona for the design.
Research
For the task, I went through some of the logo images that was in
Pinterest. I personally liked logos where it had an element of
illustration. The thinking that had to go through to balance out the
illustration within the letters were fascinating to me.

Progress
I first started out by pointing on who I am and what I like to
do;
- I am tall
- I would like to be big
- I usually sleep late
- I like Kimchi
- I like simplistic and minimalistic things
- likes electronics
I then tried to sketch out some logos that fitted to my
personality.

| Figure 2.1: Reference (10.10.2022) |
After looking at some of the logos that was done by big companies,
they all had a meaning and especially the ones that had a secret
meaning behind it made me like it the most. Such as; FedEx, Toblerone,
Continental, etc.

|
| Figure 2.3: Toblerone logo (10.10.2022) |
|
| Figure 2.4: Continental logo (10.10.2022) |
The hidden meanings and the hidden graphical elements really made me want to go in that sort of approach.
|
| Figure 2.5: Kim mark (10.10.2022) |
Trying to go towards an illusion effect I got a quick sketch the image above. The K looks normal and as it branches support towards the I, and following the letter K's stiffness, I went ahead and made the I and the M have a similar effect as the K as they turn to the opposite direction.
I felt like I liked this the most out of the other sketches I've done
as the boldness really made the logo stand out. Coincidentally, I really
liked that the other letters followed the K in its design.
As Mr. Vinod has not really said too much about the design, other than
that I needed more of a description on why this mark resonates with me
personally, I just went with it.
I started by making more precise changes in the angles and the
thickness as it didn't have consistency. I traced the outline of the
right side of the K, where there is a stiff point going inwards. Then
with that, I referenced it with the other bars and made it have the same
length, and the angle.

|
| Figure 2.7: Kim mark correction #2 (15.10.2022) |
By trying to get the consistency correct, I ran into an issue where some of the bars were poking out of the overlapping shapes.
|
| Figure 2.8: Kim mark correction #2 (15.10.2022) |
In the figure above, I tried making the shape of the m was poke out on the right side and I didn't quite like that. I changed it back to a rounder shape afterwards.
The logo makes it seem that it is really chaotic and busy and that was kind
of what I wanted it to look like. The imitation of the shadow was sort of
there but I couldn't get anything interesting to happen in that
area.
Mr. Vinod has stated that we should consider the space that we are using and to fill out the negative space that we are not using. That way, the mark can be more full and be more interesting to see.

Task 2b: Collateral
For this task, with the mark that we made in task 2a, we needed to make an Instagram account as well as an animation to go with the logo. It didn't have to be complicated, just an animation that makes the logo stand out.
Mockups
Research
Starting off with the Instagram posts, I started off by exploring some of the more popular accounts like Nike, Adidas, Zara, etc.

| Figure 3.1: Nike Instagram page (18.10.2022) |
I figured that I would use a concept like Zara where the posts have a similar color tone with different graphical elements.
Progress
I searched up some of the mock ups online, and I wanted specifically for clothing, and exercise related things as the logo really made it seem like it was a sports logo. As for the color. I decided with orange as it makes it have more of a pop to the design and it goes well with black.
I changed the mockup designs I found online to my logo, but I could only find so many of the things that I could really use. Some were too bold for me to use as it had too much things going on or it didn't quite have a theme of an Instagram post.

There were other mockups that I tried, but it just didn't fit in well and the photoshop wasn't as great as the other mockups.

| Figure 4.7: Mockup attempt (20.10.2022) |
The figure above shows one of the attempts made for a socks mockup, but the layers that were provided could not overlay the shadows, so when I added in the background to an orange color, there were no shadows cast on the floor and this made the design really fake and cheap. This was scrapped and not used for the Instagram post.
The first mockup of the shirt originally had the gradient background on the t shirt itself and although I was not intending to use it, I thought it was a neat touch and it matched the theme as well (I personally like graphic shirts so maybe that's why I left it there).
With the mockups done, I thought that some graphical elements should be added other than mockups. So I started with one that has a gradient background.
To match with the ones with the gradient backgrounds, I first made many duplicates of the logo in illustrator on a plain background so it would just save as a transparent background when I saved it as a png.

| Figure 4.8: Design #1 (20.10.2022) |
Then, I imported this file onto photoshop and although it can be done in Illustrator as well, I added in the gradient background in photoshop since I am more confident in the software than Illustrator's gradients.
Also, I made a different logo that could support the main logo shown in mockup #3. It was a simple design and I think it looks better when put on certain things that is smaller and in need of more background space. I also decided to use the image for one of the panels in the posts on Instagram as it clears up some space and I felt like it was necessary as it have a clean background.
For the last post for the 9-panel Instagram post, I decided to make it similar to the figure above, so I made a different style but with similar elements.

For the last post for the 9-panel Instagram post, I decided to make it similar to the figure above, so I made a different style but with similar elements.
I changed the lengths of some of the bars and reflected them. I added in the letters 'KIM' as well to fill out the space that was left.
Progress
For the animation, I decided to do it with after effects as it would create a good simple animation with objects in Illustrator. I searched up some tutorials online on Youtube and I tried to make some similar styles to it.
I really liked the animation of the stroke effect on logos so I used that for the main effect.

Outcome of the animation - here
It was my first time using after effects for a logo design and I think it came out pretty okay and although it looks pretty similar

| Figure 5.1: Animation highlight (22.10.2022) |
I didn't have a title for the animation so I skipped the part where the title pops up after the outlining finishes and the logo shrinks. The video showed as 25 frames per second but by adjusting, I changed it to 60 fps to ensure smoothness to the animation.
There were not too many problems when creating the animation
Instagram
Research
For the last part, I needed to create an Instagram account. and to make the account look interesting, people make similar compositions within 3 separate posts or more so that each row has an interesting flow.

| Figure 6.1: Premiere League Instagram account (22.10.2022) |
Progress
From the 3 compositions, I decided to go with the last one as it seemed more natural to be in an Instagram post. So, I then went on to create an Instagram account and for the profile picture, I just changed the original mark to have an orange outline with a white fill in the inside.
Trying to make the account look interesting, I gathered all the mockups and the designs I made and placed them in different compositions to see how it would look.

The final outcome came out as expected and I think it looked pretty okay. I didn't put in my logo animation in one of the posts but I decided to put in under the description of the account.

Feedback
Week 6: The positive space should dominate the negative space in the square of the form. You need to have a mark that represent something, ex: a personality.
This needs to have a reason why it is that way. The logo or mark needs to be memorable, unique and must look like none other, but also functional and under a good concept.
Week 7: Okay attempt on the logo, but could be more descriptive about why the logo came to that design.
Reflections
Experience
The tasks that were given to us felt like it was going to be very long and troublesome to do, but they seemed pretty okay when the tasks were done on time. The experience I had over the task 2 exercises were that it was a little bit more fun and more interactive than the other projects that we have done and I am quite getting used to doing the tasks more frequently.
Observations
While doing the task, I found that I was going through the exercises surprisingly well. However I didn't screenshot my progress and that was really frustrating to get by when writing the blog.
Findings
The animation part of the task was I think on the more challenging side. I didn't get taught too much on how to use after effects and although I could've used Photoshop and edited the objects one by one, frame-by-frame, I thought that I could give it a try and I found myself in quite a confusion. Also, it would've been better if I screenshotted more on the way of doing my work, but I completely forgot about it which led to me not being able to provide accurate photos on what I did for my work. This led to me not being able to track down what I did first and last.
