Task 3A

Research

Figure 1.1: Typeface Reference #1 (15.05.2022)

Figure 1.2: Typeface Reference #2 (15.05.2022)

FRom the references I wanted to try out different fonts and typefaces to have a more variety for this task.

Deconstruction of Fonts

Progression (Sketches)

I have tried thinking of different fonts that could be unique (but its never really unique) but also has simplicity. From the research and the reference that was searched on, gave me some ideas on the sketches that was supposed to be handed in for review from the class.

Figure 3.1: Sketch #1 (23.05.2022)

Figure 3.2: Sketch #2 (23.05.2022)

Figure 3.3: Sketch #3 (23.05.2022)

I gave in 10 different fonts for review and Mr. Vinod told me to try to be more imaginative with this and some of the fonts were way to thin and that it needed to be changed. He said that #5 should be okay to do, but I decided to try on the #9 and #10 since it looks a lot more like a real font.

Progression (Illustrator)

I went onto Illustrator for the making of the font, and tried to digitalize many of the sketches that was handed in.

Figure 4.1: Illustrator Design #1 (26.05.2022)

The figure above was the first try out for the sketches, where it is seen that it is too simplistic, and was following the sketch of #1.

Figure 4.2: Illustrator Design #2 (26.05.2022)

This one was more of a real try than the first one, adding a bit more details here and there to the lines to give it a more defined font-look. This was following the #10 sketch on the artboard.

Figure 4.3: Illustrator Design #3 (26.05.2022)

The third try was the one that Mr. Vinod said that could work, but just a quick draw in illustrator to see how it would look like if I were to actually do this, but in the end, I didn't like how inconsistent it looked so I scrapped the idea.

In the end, I went with the sketch #9, as it very much had a serious but simple look to it.

Figure 4.4: Illustrator Design #4 (26.05.2022)

The simple design really gave a unique feel to me and I personally liked how the edges were added with a slight block to give it its bulkiness. The original one was way too thin for it to be a good concept, so I added in a 10 pt outline and made it into a shape then with pathfinder, I united all of it to form a one letter form for each.

Figure 4.5: Illustrator Progression (26.05.2022)

The boldness really made it look more visible to see and comfortable to read. It was too thin, and the newer brush up was an ideal choice to make in my opinion.

However, Mr. Vinod has said that I could pump up the size a little bit and make it more bolder than usual. So I added a bit more outline and it looked a lot bolder than the previous style.

Progression (FontLab)

Following the procedures that Mr. Vinod gave in the YouTube playlist, I added each individual letters to the board and made adjustments to the kerning.

Progression (Poster)

The poster was given as a task after the making of the font, to show off the font that we made, in the text of a "MAKE FONT GREAT AGAIN!" in a poster of the dimensions of A4.

Figure 6.1: Poster design #1 (03.06.2022)

Figure 6.2: Poster Design #2 (03.06.2022)

I decided that the design #2 is better as it looks a lot cleaner than the first.

FEEDBACK

Mr. Vinod has stated that the letter K is alright, the other letters with the middle part, such as G, Y, A, etc, needs to be on the same level as it will show uniform level.

He also said that the middle part is usually a bit more on the top side, and that is shorter, since when even on the same size as the outer lines, it will look like it is pointing outwards, which I have noticed me seeing it that way when making this typeface.

Comma and Full stop also needs to be bigger.

REFLECTIONS

Experience

This was definitely something that I wasn't used to, especially making a new typeface. Learning from the previous tasks was a plus as it made it at least a little but easier for me to understand the fundamentals of making a font.

Observations

A lot of the fonts and typefaces I have seen were mostly similar which was pretty much clear that it was hard for me to create something unique and that has never been created before. I also found out the fonts that are universally, look the same but in reality, there are so much more to it for each individual characters.

Findings

For this project/task, it really gave me a better understanding of how difficult it is to make fonts and I really appreciate the people who have done their work and made these amazing fonts. I found it pretty difficult to adjust the kerning and such in the program as I have never used anything like that before.
