Typographic Systems

There are 8 different variations and an infinite amount of permutations within them. There are;
- Axial
- Radial
- Dilational
- Random
- Grid
- Modular
- Transitional
- Bilateral

There is a point where the design needs to have a communication element in it or else there is no point of it being there.

Typographic systems are akin to what architects term shape grammars. It has a set of rules that is unique and provide a sense of purpose that focuses and directs the decision making.

Exercise: Typographic System

For the first exercise we were told to give 8 different concepts of the typographic systems. where it included all Axial, Radial, Dilatational, Random, Grid, Modular, Transitional and Bilateral systems that were needed to be implemented on the 200x200 canvas in InDesign.

Progress

I started out with the tutorials given in the websites to work on these exercises and came up with these different designs starting from figure 1.1. Following the instructions, I got to choose 1 different color to follow up with my design so I went with the color code "a09fcf". It was a light purple color and I felt like it was just the right amount of purple where it was subtle but not too light that it blended with the background and not too bold to overthrow the other words.

I tried making 2 different designs for the axial and radial to see how they would turn out. But I only presented 1 of them when Mr Vinod was giving out feedbacks. Mr Vinod accepted a few of them but some were in need of changes.

I wanted the style of the axial to look a bit more unique than just having one line in the middle going sideways and such so I added in 2 more lines to make it easily identifiable on what I wanted to express more in the texts.

I made these subtle changes to these designs, where Mr Vinod has told me to change and I made newer designs along the way.

Exercise: Type & Play (Part 1)

For this exercise, we were told to get a picture, and from that, find shapes that looked like letterforms and turn it into a refined one. The extracted letterforms were to be edited through illustrator and refined to look like the referenced font, but not quite. We were supposed to make it until it had look of the font but also the effect of the extracted photo. 5 letterforms were to be extracted, and they all needed the consistent look on them. If one was wavy then the others were to be as well.

Progress

Figure 3.2: Reference Photo #2 (16.09.2022)

Figure 3.3: Reference Photo #3 (16.09.2022)

These 3 images were the reference photo that I had taken and I decided to go with the first photo as it seemed like it had more chance to get more letterforms out of it.

I started out with the 'L', 'S', 'C', 'P' and 'O'.

However, I did not quite like how the 'O' turned out to be since it was taken from a flower and not the roots or the vines. (The 'L' was not from the vines but I switch it later on).

Figure 3.4: Letterforms taken

Figure 3.5: Letterform draft

Figure 3.6: Letterform adjustment (16.09.2022)

So since I didn't like how it looked, I changed the 'O' to an 'A' (taken from a twig, swapped later).

Figure 3.7: Letter 'A' taken from photo (16.09.2022)

Figure 3.8: Letterform progression #1 (16.09.2022)

I took Gill Sans MT as the reference font since it looked more alike than the other 9 typefaces that were given by the school. The progression is shown from top to bottom, indicating on the bottom of each category, what was changed in each step.

I then made the posters out of the letterforms onto the initial photo that was taken to get these letters.

Figure 3.10: first poster #1 (16.09.2022)

Figure 3.11: first poster #2 (16.09.2022)

After getting feedback again however, I was told that my design was in need of change for the L and S. So I made the decision to get new extracted letterform from the same principles as the other letters.

Figure 3.15: Letterforms extracted and edited (21.09.2022)

I got the letters 'L' and 'O' from the vines this time instead of the branches to match it more fairly with the other letterforms.

I followed the steps as to the other forms as well, like how I did in the previous one. I asked Mr Vinod for a review, and he said that it was getting there.

I looked at it again and I quite didn't like how the 'O' looked like a 'Q' instead of 'O' because of the little dangle or the curve that ends on one side of the point.

Exercise: Type & Play (Part 2)

For part 2 of the exercise type & play, we were instructed to take part in a competition for a phone company named 'HONOR'. It was for both the assignment and the competition. we got a briefing for it in week 4, and we were supposed to implement sentences or key words 'Cultural Prosperity' and 'Renewal of Life', following the HONOR guidelines.

Mr. Vinod has stated that we need to make the words interact and embed well onto the image. The image should not be taken from online and must be taken from yourself. Since even if the image says its free, we don't want to take a chance on its copyright claims.

If there should be graphical elements in the work, the elements should be simplified to a degree and the words needs to be integrated onto the work.

Progress

I went to my gallery and took out some pictures that had the effects of being a wallpaper, and decided to digitalize them.

Figure 4.1: Reference Photo #1 (24.09.2022)

Figure 4.2: Reference Photo #2 (24.09.2022)

I tried to implement the word "culture" in the first image but since Mr Vinod has said to not use images with too much contrast as it will ruin the wallpaper aesthetics, I decided not to go with it because the lanterns were too bright and felt messy.

I went with the koi fishes as it felt more neutral and harmonic. I wanted to try and digitalize the image to see how it would look.

Figure 4.3: Progress #1 (24.09.2022)

I started by tracing out the koi fishes and color filling them with a caramel orange color to simulate koi's color and then I put in a light orange color to balance the work out. I typed in "CULTURE" word by word and put them in a diagonal manner.

Figure 4.4: Progress #2 (24.09.2022)

I added in repeating white circles that goes outwards from each of the fishes and eventually joins up at the end.

Figure 4.5: Progress #3 (24.09.2022)

The ripple's opacity was changed to 55% from 100% because it looked way too bright and ruined the background in my opinion.

Figure 4.6: Progress #4 (26.09.2022)

Figure 4.7: Progress #5 (26.09.2022)

Figure 4.8: Progress #6 (26.09.2022)

This was when I realized that I made a mistake making the design vertically and not horizontally. So I switched up the canvas and made it a 6000x3000px. I inserted the design back into it and since it was supposed to be a HD wallpaper, I replicated the water effect as well so that it fits better.

Figure 4.9: Redo (28.09.2022)

I saw that the water effect on the design was too crowded and since it was originally made for a vertical and smaller workspace, the replicated effect intersected each other and it didn't look nice. The ripple on the water that comes off the fishes were a bit too light so I decided to change the opacity to 80% instead of 50%.

Figure 4.10: Ripples adjustments (28.09.2022)

I thought that it was not enough details that made the composition full and were too heavy on the illustrations on the right side and didn't give balance.

So first I tried to move the letters of the word 'CULTURE' more randomly rotated and I decided to make the koi fishes have more details since it just looked like a blob of a fish and was just colored golden orange.

Figure 4.11: Word Experiments (30.09.2022)

Figure 4.12: Composition trial (30.09.2022)

It looked better than the first one so I tried changing more to the composition. I changed how the word 'CULTURE' was represented and I gave more ripples to the water.

Figure 4.13: Final Design (30.09.2022)

I think it more or less looks better with the word being on the left than heavily relying the fishes to make it more full on the right side.

Feedback

Week 2:
Axial is okay, need to do something about the lecture theatre as it is not on the radial line and if the line that is touching is in connection with the radial line then it becomes acceptable. Radial is alright aswell, need to make some of the words that are on the sides have a bit of diagonal ange to it to have a radial effect.
Dilateral needs work on the formatting Random needs to be a lot more random than trying to have symmetry
Grid system is alright
Transitional is ok
Modular could be worked on but alright
Bilateral is ok

Week 3:
The A was a bit off than the other extracted letterform, but what I could do to make it look more like the others, I could warp it to make it more rounded than jagged that it got from the branches and the twigs.

Week 4:
Need to take away the letterforms from the same principles as the other ones and not get it from 2 different objects that does not look similar to each other. The S has some curvature to its letterform but the thickness of it is inconsistent. The A and the L was taken from a twig and not the vines so need to redo them to match the other letterforms

Reflections

Experience
The tasks at hand were pretty alright to finish, but there were things that I couldn't quite get a hold of. Such as the last one, of the type and play as it had to do with the competition and with the lots of work that is given by other lecturers indifferent modules, it was difficult to finish it with the time that I had,.

Observations
I found myself having difficulties still with getting the time correct for the tasks that needs to be done. I still need to fix on that habit as I had experienced the same thing as before in the past semesters.

Findings
While doing the 3 tasks that was given out to us, I realized that the classes has gotten a lot more difficult and that the letterforms that I try to make in typography classes needs to be more accurate on what I want to represent and that it needs to be consistent throughout the tasks.
