Project 3 - Character Modelling
For the final project, we needed to make a chaaracter from a show or a movie.
Mr Kamal showed us tutorials and he went through the process by making a character from the tv show Spongebob Squarepants. He made Patrick Star.
I wanted to make a realistic character like a game character but my god that would be horrible to do as it would take such a long time. So I decided to just go with a character from a korean animated tv show, Pororo.
I looked at Pororo's design and I did not want to do that.. So I just decided to go with Pororo's brother, Crong.
I searched up Crong's character turnaround sheet, but I couldn't find anything since I guess its very limited because its a korean animation show.. So I just had to piece many images together that I could find and try to replicate that with just the images I had.
I first add in a cube and subdivided it so that it would be like a ball but not quite. I applied it then moved some vertices around and I had a rough shape of crong's head.
Then I made 2 semi circles and added that for his eyelids. Then 2 balls to make the eyeballs.

With that, I made another cube and subdivided it once again, and made a rough shape of his torso. I repeated this to make the legs and the arms.
For the hands, it was quite difficult and very confusing. It was a process I had never used before and I just tried to follow a tutorial I found online.

After, I went into sculpting mode and added meshes and tried to make sure that it looked like the picture reference I had found online. I made his nose bigger, and his head a bit smaller and kept making adjustment even to his torso. I also made another semi-circle and made them into his nose.

Then, it was his feet. The toe nails were like stretched out stones, so I tried to made segments from his original mesh but that turned out horribly since I couldn't really enlarge or scale it to its size properly and the line dents in between the toenails were not really making it easy to work on the mesh itself. So I just decided to make the toenails by adding in a cube and adjusting them to fit the shape.

I then duplicated it 2 times for the other 2 nails and I mirrored it so I could have them on the other foot.

Finally, for the coloring, I went into uv editing on the top and went to texture paint and I just made a circle for his belly and made everything else green.

But for the other things like the head and the toenails and the bones he has on his back, was all done with material properties.

Reflections
Experience
The project was quite weird in my opinion.. I did like that we got to make an organic character but the way that this was made was kind of iffy for me. we could've made a character just by sculpting it but I didn't really mind too much. The hands and the organic part of making a character was pretty new so this was a good learning experience for me.
Observations
I definitely found myself struggling with the hands as they were not really working too properly from the tutorial.. I think it had something to do with being 4 fingers instead of 5 but it just kept overlapping with each other and the mesh wouldn't fill itself up if the vertex was just slightly moved. I also kind of noticed that I tend to overthink things and try the harder way which takes too much time to do so that is something I might have to fix..
Findings
Creating organic characters was pretty fun overall and this would eventually come back so I would probably spend a bit more time learning new things in blender to really hone my skills for the future. There were lots of new tools that I never tried before so I'm interested to learn about the other things that is in store for me.
